With Blake gone, Leary wonders who is in charge.īuckley is sworn in as Mayor of San Francisco. He attacked her sister and was killed in the process by Jacob. She reveals that Blake did it, but that he's also dead. Leary notices Sophie beaten and bruised and asks who did this to her. Leary reminds them that the mayor is on their side, and with him, they can force the coolies out. They pay their dues on what little they make, and they're tired of waiting and watching the Chinese ride past every day on the way to their jobs. Leary reminds them that he's fighting for all of them and that change doesn't come overnight, but they're tired of waiting. They have no job nor money, and their families are going hungry. Lee at least know where to draw the line between good and bad, to which Bill asks, "What side of the line does killing your own kin fall on?" In a fit of rage, Lee punches Bill and slams him to the ground until Harrison and Stone intervene. He then confronts Bill for planting the watch after speaking with Timmons' widow. Bill notices that Lee looks horrible and questions if he's up for this, to which Lee replies that when the time comes, he's certain Bill will just take over and pin it on the first Chinese man he finds. He wants every inch searched until they find Jacob. As far as they're concerned, Chinatown is closed, effective immediately. Young Jun has always been impulsive, by his father's account.Ĭhief Flannagan has updated the boys over at the precinct with the news of Mayor Blake's death. He agrees that the Fung Hai need to go, but there was a smarter way to go about it. Young Jun grabs a drink with Father Jun to celebrate them taking out the Fung Hai without breaking the treaty, but Father Jun wonders how many men they lost in the process. Fortunately, Mai Ling knows of other people who aren't the least bit concerned with their treaties. Li Yong didn't think they'd move so quickly after Zing. She suspects that Ah Sahm is provoking her to break the treaty. Mai Ling admits to having underestimated Ah Sahm after discovering that the Hop Wei took down what remained of the Fung Hai. Rather than just burning the Fung Hai headquarters down, as Young Jun would prefer, Ah Sahm believes a better message is hanging their colors on their headquarters. He wants the Chief to put on a show before they go public with the mayor's death. Penny explains that he was just defending her, but Buckley simply wants an arrest.Īs acting mayor, Buckley pulls Chief Flannagan to the side to tell him that he wants every man available searching for Jacob. When Penny is reluctant to reveal that Jacob saved her, Sophie reveals it. Sophie tried to help, but he threw her into a wall. He was strangling her and she couldn't breathe. Penny reveals that Samuel was drunk and attacked her. Chief Flannagan informs him of Mayor Blake's murder and takes him to the scene of the crime and to see Penny, who they question about Blake's death. Buckley then awakens from his sleep at the sound of the police at the door. He has explained this to them as they sit in the middle of a Fung Hai den they've just raided.įlashback to the Civil War, Buckley is badly injured, and his leg is in need of amputation due to a growing infection, unfortunately the only tool available is an old, rusty saw. With this story, Hong explains that the chain he fights with is his trademark. And when he killed people, he would choke them out with the same violin strings, hence the violin man. He joined the tong, and after a while, his hands got so beat up from fights that he couldn't play anymore, so he pulled the strings off his violin and would carry them with him. He used to know this gangster called the Violin Man. Hong explains his choice of a weapon to Ah Sahm and Young Jun. Ah Toy fights for her life, while Chao faces a major dilemma. Buckley steps into a new role and considers a proposition from Leary, who faces questions from the Irish workingmen. The police shut down Chinatown in their hunt for a killer, just as the Hop Wei make a move that puts Mai Ling on edge.
